Is your pet stressed?

An alarming number of pets suffer from mental health disorders and left untreated or managed inappropriately, many of these conditions can rapidly deteriorate resulting in:

  • The suffering of the pet (comprised welfare)
  • The break-down of the unique human-animal bond shared between you and your pet
  • The risk of serious injury to your pet, other pets or even you or the people you love most
  • The risk of serious financial loss and legal ramifications

It is important to remember that every animal is different – not all pets will respond in the same way to changes in their routine or environment.

Altered behaviour in your pet can be a sign that he or she is struggling to cope, so discussing this with one of our veterinarians is worthwhile.

Signs your pet may be suffering from an underlying behavioural condition:

  • Vocalising (barking or meowing)
  • The inability to settle
  • Inappropriate toileting habits
  • Aggression or reactivity
  • Excessive grooming
  • Shivering or shaking
  • Isolation or very ‘clingy behaviour’
  • Fears or phobias (e.g. thunderstorms)
  • Destructive behaviour
  • Not coping when left alone
  • Repetitive or compulsive behaviours
  • Being very timid or shy
  • Difficulties interacting with people or pets
  • Hiding

It is often very difficult for pet owners to understand that their pets’ behaviour is abnormal, particularly in cases where the behaviour has been present been for a number of years. The simple fact is that whilst certain behaviours are common within the pet’s routine, those behaviours may actually indicate that the pet is not coping emotionally.

Tackling behavioural issues often requires a multi-modal approach. Treatment plans may include:

  • Calming pheromones such as Adaptil or Feliway
  • Supplements such as Zylkene
  • A behavioural modification plan and suitable training strategy
  • Veterinary only specific medications
  • Referral to a veterinary behavioural specialist

If you think your pet requires veterinary behavioural intervention, or if you have general questions about how to manage certain behaviours, we can help!
